I am incredibly lucky to live near Get Fresh Daily, a community garden that hosts the Black Farmers Market in West Philadelphia.
I first came as a neighbor, a curious observer. Then, a customer and an enthusiastic participant in the rhythm of the space.
Eventually, I brought my camera.

I am a granddaughter of the Great Migration.
And like many Black Americans, my relationship with the land is complicated. Generations of knowledge about growing food and working the soil are interwoven with the scars of forced labor and violence.
But the land did not hurt us. And it’s powerful to see so many of us returning to it at Get Fresh Daily and beyond.
As soon as I set foot in the garden, I knew I wanted it on the record.
The farmers who work the soil, the neighbors’ excitement, the rich colors of the produce, the curiosity, and the brilliant knowledge freely shared. The community that’s just as vibrant as the vine-ripe tomatoes on the table.
I want us to remember, support, and invest in the people growing something beautiful on 52nd Street.
